Cliches

A cliche is an opinion, phrase, an expression, idea, or element of an artistic work which has become overused to the point of losing its original meaning, or effect, and even, to the point of being irritating, especially when at some earlier time it was considered meaningful or novel that is unoriginal and overused such as ‘What did your last slave die of’

All of the below are cliches as they are common in the culture we live in.

Duckface blog

The duckface is become more and more common with girls who insist on pouting so much it makes them look like a duck.

Signifiers

Vietnam Headshot

The author of this image is trying to get across the brutal conflict that is happening over seas in Vietnam that people may not be aware of. This image was actually staged as the person being shot was brought outside so the photographer could get a clear shot of what was going on, showing that you shouldn’t always believe what you see as yes the guy was going to be shot but he wasn’t going to be shot publicly on the street, the only reason he was is because the photographer was there.

This image from my point of view shows someone being brutally shot by a soldier suggesting that their is a war going on.

This image to other people may suggest violence and outlaw due to the gun being present in the image.

Flag raise

The author of this image is trying to illustrate the racism that was occurring in 1970 in america.

This image to me shows the open violence towards the ethnic minority in the streets of America.

Other people may see this image and automatically relate this picture to america due to the american flag, they will see the violence and think that there is possibly a protest going on.

This image was also staged. The way the soldiers have been positioned shows them all working together to raise the American flag signifying victory and that they have all worked together to win the battle they were fighting and to show the world they have succeeded.

American riot

The author of this image is trying to show the triumph of the american soldiers raising their flag at iwo jima.

This image to me shows some kind of victory or triumph that the american soldiers have achieved hence why they are raising their flag.

To other people this image may mean that the soldiers have just won a battle to secure a country or island and that is why they are raising their flag

Signifiers are A sign’s physical form (such as a sound, printed word, or image) as distinct from its meaning.

Signifiers are used everywhere from advertising to documentary photography. Such as seeing a certain dog automatically make the viewer think of a certain brand of paint.

Week One

Genre is a kind of literary or artistic work, a style of expressing yourself in writing and a class of artistic endeavour having a characteristic form or technique. Most people know the genres they like so when picking a film the films are already categorised into the certain categories so you can just pick from the specific category.

The four films i decided to pick that had different genres were:

InglouriousBasterds

Inglourious Basterds was released in 2009 and directed by Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth. There are lots of genres to  this film but the most apparent ones are Black comedy, Action/Adventure and Thriller. You can tell just from the cover that the film is a black comedy as it contains guns and a red background that both relate to violence confirming that the film is a black comedy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inglourious_Basterds

Willy Wonka

The original Willy wonka was released in 1971 and was directed by mel Stuart the main genres of this film are Musical drama, Musical Comedy and Family/childrens film. Just from the cover you can tell it is a family film by the soft colours used in the cover and the flowing writing.

Lock Stock

The release date for Lock Stock was 1998 and directed by Guy Richie. The genres of this film are, Thriller, Crime Comedy and Crime fiction

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/lock_stock_and_two_smoking_barrels/

Star wars

the original Star Wars was released in 1977 and directed by George Lucas. The genres of these films are  Adventure film, Action Film and Scifi (Science Fiction) The cover gives away that this film is a scifi as it contains robots and you can see different planets and stars in the background signifying that it is a science fiction movie,

http://www.mtv.com/photos/photos-from-the-original-star-wars-trilogy/1530182/1920030/photo.jhtml#1920030

These films are all classed under separate genres but some such as star wars and lock stock share sub genres (Action Film)

Image and Text

Due to the increasing use of social networking images containing small, easy to read and usually comedic captions are become more popular and are easily made by most people due to the ability to do so on most computers.

University Culture

Uni 1

This image i feel sums part of uni life. It is a picture of my alarm going off at 2:56pm. Lots of students at uni go out and don’t get in to the early hours of the morning then if they don’t have lectures the next day they just sleep in and keep snoozing their alarm. The fact that everything around the phone is black shows that the person hasn’t turned the light on or opened the curtains yet today.

Uni 5

This picture of a student bank account with a maxed out overdraft may be a familiar site to lots of uni students as they have to watch their money as many are on a tight budget for the first time in their life. Signifying having no money as a university student.

SONY DSC

A  big part of uni life is the social side, and by this i mean the party lifestyle. All of these bottles are empty and vary from spirits to wine but most of the alcohol is the cheap and non branded. The amount of empty bottles signifies a big social gathering with most likely a party atmosphere.

Uni 3

The pile of empty dominoes boxes signifies the takeaways that students get as most of them probably aren’t competent cooks just yet so may rely heavily on fast food and takeaways.

SONY DSC

The washing basket full of dirty washing signifies the “dirty” lifestyle that lots of people have towards students. The reason they may have this perception of them is that it their first time living alone and independently so haven’t quite got in the routine of washing their clothes on a regular basis. Instead just leaving them until they have no other clothes to wear then wash them.

Due to the signifiers in the image such as the empty student bank account you can tell that these pictures are something to do with students or university without any annotations below the image.

Collage

A collage is a form of art in which various materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric are arranged and stuck to a backing.

A montage is a single composition created by juxtaposing a series of pieces of paper, photos or other media to create an artistic image.

Aggression is the subject i chose too explore while creating my collage.

These are some image that i have found that influenced my final collage.

Anger 2

Collage

After looking through different images of how people express anger i decided to take pictures of myself copying the different facial expressions i saw when doing my research instead of using copyright free images and then layer the different expressions on top of each other to create a collage.

The pictures i took were all from the same angle and distance so when it came to adding them into the collage they would fit on top of each other easily, this then allowed me to change the size to the desired effect in photoshop.

This is  my final collage i created using the theme aggression.

Genre

Genre is a kind of literary or artistic work, a style of expressing yourself in writing and a class of artistic endeavour having a characteristic form or technique. Most people know the genres they like so when picking a film the films are already categorised into the certain categories so you can just pick from the specific category.

Anchorman

Anchor Man: It’s the 1970’s as San Diego anchorman Ron Burgundy is the top dog in network TV, which gives way to his freewheeling sexism with his fraternal like crew. But all that’s about to change when ambitious reporter Veronica Corningstone has just arrived as a new employee at his TV station. The main genre for this film is comedy but a sub genre i have noticed is drama as Veronica battles for his position.

Step Brothers

Step Brothers: Brennan Huff and Dale Doback are both about 40 when Brennan’s mom and Dale’s dad marry. The sons still live with the parents so they must now share a room. Initial antipathy threatens the household’s peace and the parents’ relationship. Dad lays down the law: both slackers have a week to find a job. Out of the job search and their love of music comes a pact that leads to friendship but more domestic disarray compounded by the boys sleepwalking. Hovering nearby are Brennan’s successful brother and his lonely wife, the brother wants to help sell his step-father’s house, the wife wants Dale’s attention, and the newlyweds want to retire and sail the seven seas. The main genre for this film is comedy as you watch the friendship form and fallouts happen between the two brothers. The sub genre is family as it shows the hardships and joy that can occur from two separate families coming together.

 shaunofthedead

Shaun doesn’t have a very good day, so he decides to turn his life around by getting his ex to take him back, but he times it for right in the middle of what may be a zombie apocalypse, but for him, it’s an opportunity to show everyone he knows how useful he is by saving them all. All he has to do is survive… And get his ex back

All of these film fall into the same main genre (comedy) as they are all set up to make the viewer laugh, although the sub genres of these three films are all different. They all have a plot designed to make the viewer laugh and also keep them interested in the film.

Ski 1

 Bissell Hazen

Ski 2

 Lauren Ellis

Ski 3

Liam Doran

These photos are all easy to categorise under extreme sports, then also all fit into the same sub genre, skiing. They all contain extreme skiers performing stunts that are not able to be performed by the average skier. Another way that they could fit into the same genre is if all the photos were take in the same resort/area. The three pictures all seem to be set up to exaggerate the hight the skier is jumping or the speed they are travelling using low camera angles and fairly fast shutter speeds. I chose these three photos as although they all do fit into the same category each photographer has captured their image in a sightly different way.

Surrealsim 1

These paintings are all the same genre; Surrealism. through the use of juxtapositions and scaling sometimes usually using real objects but out of their usual surroundings creating a almost dreamlike image. The three pictures i have chosen all have human features and i think that this adds to the surrealist look and makes the paintings look even more surreal. The artist concentrate on creating an un-nerving and un natural thought process for their viewer, but also entice them to look closer at all the elements that are added to the picture creating this complicated piece of art.
